Potential S-FR Performance and MPG Specs Leaked

The Toyota/Scion S-FR has been revealed, but Toyota is tight-lipped on the tiny sports car’s specifications.  sfrforums.com claims to have obtained official specs on the S-FR and it looks like the car will slot perfectly below the FR-S as Toyota or Scion’s smallest sports car.  With 130 horsepower and just over 2,000 lbs, the S-FR will be one of the most exciting cars to drive when it hits the road.

S-FR Engine

The S-FR will be powered by a 130-horsepower, 109 ft-lb torque turbocharged 1.5-liter engine with VVT-iE variable valve timing.  The 2NR-FKE engine in the S-FR is a tuned version of the Japanese Corolla’s power plant with direct injection added.

S-FR Weight

Beware of crosswinds, the S-FR will weigh a feathery 2,160 lbs. That’s 90-lbs more than the original 1990 Mazda Miata. According to the calculator at 060calculator.com, that should be good for a 0-60 time of around 6.9 seconds.

S-FR Suspension

The S-FR will use a MacPherson strut front suspension and double wishbone rear suspension.  This is the same setup the Scion FR-S uses.

S-FR MPG

The S-FR got a 20.0 KM/L rating in the Japanese test cycle (which would be 47 MPG).  For comparison, the FR-S got a 12.3 KM/L rating (36 MPG) and its EPA ratings are 25 city, 34 highway, 28 combined. If you assume the same rate of conversion (*2.27), the S-FR would get 45 MPG in the United States.

S-FR Transmission

Purists rejoice! The S-FR will only be available with a 6-speed Aisin manual transmission.  Of course when the car finally hits production or makes it to America, it may have an automatic transmission option.

Toyota/ Scion S-FR Concept Introduced at 2015 Tokyo Motor Show

Toyota has unveiled the S-FR concept car at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. The Scion FR-S was Toyota’s proof that they can still build a fun to drive sports car, even if it isn’t a tire boiling powerhouse like the Supra, and the S-FR looks to take that theme and run with it. Smaller (and probably lighter) than the FR-S, the S-FR concept looks like a bare-bones sports car in the vein of the original sports cars – the Austin Healey, MG’s roadsters, Sunbeam Alpine, Fiat and Alfa Romeo Spiders, and of course the MX-5 Miata. With retro headlights and a classic round body, the S-FR looks the part of an old-school sports car too.

The Scion S-FR will be 13.1 feet long, 5.6 feet wide, 4.3 feet high, a little bit smaller than the FR-S in every way.

Toyota has not officially announced whether the S-FR will use the Toyota or Scion name in the United States, but they do owe Scion dealers a big one after promising and then backing out on an FR-S Convertible.
